busy as a bee…

… a sewing bee!

I got to work and finished Abby’s bedding this morning. Here are some shots of her almost-finished room. I did the pillows, dust-ruffle and curtains. Yesterday I hung the mirror and it’s almost complete. All I have left to do is the memory board for over her bed.

Sorry the pic. of the curtains is so dark. Dummy (me) left the window blinds open.

Look at Abby hammin’-it-up for the camera! GET YOUR HEAD OFF THE FABRIC… (can’t be too careful these days).

You can see the curtains a bit better in this shot:

Abby and I went to the fabric store last night to pick out some fabrics for her bedroom. Remember, we painted the walls a robin’s egg blue and she has a pink crystal chandelier. Well, she went straight to the BLACK section. She’s 5 years old…¬† it’s not time for her to want black in her room! Anyway, we (read: me) picked out this cute pink leafy pattern for her drapes (I’m going to do black polka-dot ties at the top) and the bright striped fabric for her dust-ruffle. She’s already got a white coverlet and I’m going to make throw pillows out of all 3 fabrics for her bed. Hanging over her bed, I’m going to make a memory board out of the black polka-dot fabric and use brightly colored ribbons and buttons. She’s super excited and I think it’s going to look very cute. I’m happy with the colors and she’s happy b/c I bought¬† 2 yards of black and white polka-dots. Weird kid.

She’s also got a vanity stool in there which I’m thinking about slip-covering in the black dots with a cute bright trim. Not sure yet though… that one is TBD at a later date. I know I’m going to cover it though (it won’t match the way it is).

I finally got out my machine and did some Christmas sewing. I had on the books to make several presents for the girls this year for Christmas: an apron (for helping me in the kitchen), an I Spy Bag, and a fairy tutu… all of which I promise I’ll show pictures of a bit later. Well, last night I finished the aprons and the I Spy Bags, but the tulle hasn’t arrived yet for the fairy tutus, so I’ll make them at a later date. This year for Christmas, I’m giving Abby an art box complete with water colors, a water color booklet, charcoal pencils, good colored pencils, puffy glitter paint, etc… some nicer art supplies and since Maggie isn’t quite 2, I wanted to get her a couple of sets of the Crayola Color Wonder stuff (so that she couldn’t draw all over my furniture with her new markers). Being the Mom I am, I didn’t want Maggie to be left out and not get an “art box” or something to carry her new colors in, so I made her a carrying bag especially for her new stuff.

Look how cute it turned out! I sewed a few little “pockets” on the front for her markers…

… and even a “pocket” on the back for the finger paints! AND, It has a sweet little lime green liner and lavender ribbon handles. She’s going to love it!

Speaking of Maggie, check out what we saw the other night. Under wear as outer wear went out with Madonna in the 80’s, honey…. she’s such a trend-setter!

AND – yesterday was the big Dan Zanes concert at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta! Oh my goodness… we had SO MUCH FUN! Now, I know you’ve been to a concert where tons of people stand down front (in front of the seats) and dance to the music… right? Well, this was that type of concert, but the people standing down front dancing were about 3 feet tall! It was SO CUTE to see all these kids dancing and singing to his music. And afterwards, his whole band came outside to meet-n-greet and sign autographs. Abby got a Dan Zanes t-shirt (which we had him sign on the back) and we got a concert poster that he signed. I guess it’s going to have to get framed and go up on the wall in the den like the rest fo our concert posters…

2 things…

well, Abby told me to “get out of her room” this morning, so I’m letting her sleep 5 more minutes. Aha… this gives me just enough time to post about 2 new things: 1 home-made and 1 store-bought. Which do you want first?

Store-bought:

Alice Crocs. Ahhhh, I’ve never been a fan of crocs for adults, but these are so cute… and COMFORTABLE! Jeans, casual skirts, cute little striped socks in the winter… these are going to be my new favorite pair of shoes.

Home-made:

I told you a few weeks ago that I wanted to make one of these smocks. Well, I finally got around to making it night before last. It only took about 90 minutes. I finished up the inside and hemmed it and sewed on the buttons last night and am going to wear it today with my new shoes (see above) and some cute jeans. It looks a bit like a maternity top from the 60’s, but that’s the style right now, right? I love it… this one will hide a lot…

I found a cute patchwork scarf tutorial at one of my favorite blogs, Sew Mama Sew. Well, Last Sunday, Savannah came over to play with Abby and I decided to let them pick out their fabrics and I would make each of them a matching patchwork scarf. Oh, they turned out so cute.
